REAL PHONE BOX FACTS

British Telecom says only 3% of UK citizens have made a call from one in the last month, so it is planning to remove more than one thousand boxes in 2013. Over the last decade it has taken away more than 33,000 payphones, well over a third of the total.

The Telephone Box has become an icon of British design, alongside the black taxi and the Routemaster bus. It is part of the nation's heritage and identity.

Payphones at peak: 92,000. Payphones now: 58,500 of those there are only 10,000 red phone boxes. 70% of boxes lose money. Calls from payphones down by 80% in last five years. On average, just one phone call a day is made from each of the 58,500 remaining payphones. In rural areas they are used even less frequently.
